Using Health with RunGap

health-2014-ad.png

RunGap makes it easy to export your complete training history from popular services like Garmin, Endomondo, RunKeeper, Strava, Runtastic, Polar, Suunto, Adidas, Magellan, Nike+ and many others to Health with a just few taps.

Connecting HealthKit

To use Health with RunGap you must use and iPhone running iOS 8.0.2 or later. Both HealthKit and the Health app are unavailable on iPad.

You don't have to do anything in advance to start sharing your workouts to Health. RunGap will automatically ask for permission to write "Active Energy", "Cycling Distance", "Flights Climbed", "Heart Rate", "Steps", "Swimming Distance", "Walking + Running Distance", "Workout Routes" and "Workouts" the first time you send data to HealthKit. You should allow RunGap to write all 9 data types in order for the export to work as intended. At any time you can open the "Health" app and edit the permissions for RunGap under "Apps" in the "Privacy" section for your profile (upper, right corner).

If you want to import workouts from an Apple Watch and other sources via Health you must enable this from "Health" under "Accounts & Settings" in RunGap and grant RunGap permission to read and write "Activity Energy", "Cycling Distance", "Heart Rate", "Steps", "Swimming Distance", "Swimming Strokes", "Walking + Running Distance", "Workout Routes" and "Workouts" when prompted.

Sharing your activities with HealthKit

You can share a single activity directly to HealthKit by opening it from the "Activities" list, tapping the "..." button in the upper right corner, choosing "Share" and finally "More." This will bring up a page where you can choose to share the activity to on or more of the most popular services as well as "Health" along with an optional message. If a workout already exists in HealthKit with the exact same starting time, nothing will be exported in order to avoid duplicates.

Similarly, you can share all your activities to HealthKit by choosing "Share & Export" from the upper left menu and then "health." RunGap will then export all activities not previously exported to HealthKit. This may take a little while depending on the number of activities.

If you need to upload a selection of activities, you can set a filter from the upper, right "..." menu to select workouts within a specific date range, with a special type etc.. Next, choose "Use Filter" and then "Share" from the upper, right "..." to share only the workouts matching by the filter

Finally you can use Auto Sharing to share new workouts as they are imported from other services.

Please note that the Swag Bag [1] is required in order to share activities to Health.

Importing workouts from HealthKit

RunGap will automatically start fetching your workouts as soon as you enable Health Import  from "Accounts & Settings and they will soon start appearing in the "Activities" list (choose "Activities" from the menu). When the initial synchronization is complete, you can fetch new workouts from Health by dragging the list down or tapping the refresh button from the "…" menu in the upper right corner in the "Activities" or "Friend Feed" lists.

Please note that RunGap will automatically skip duplicate activities based on starting time.

Since the introduction of iOS 11 RunGap can now import GPS maps from Health. If you are using an earlier iOS version GPS maps can not be imported from Health as described here.

Troubleshooting

You can verify that your data is correctly exported by using the Health app. You can use "Show All Data" for the individual activity types to verify that your RunGap data is correctly exported.

Please check the permissions granted to RunGap under "Apps" in the "Privacy" section of your profile in the "Health" app (upper, right corner) if you don't see your data.

RunGap will need  permission to write Active Energy", "Cycling Distance", "Flights Climbed", "Heart Rate", "Steps", "Swimming Distance", "Walking + Running Distance", "Workout Routes" and "Workouts" as well as reading "Workouts".

These steps are not working for me.  I do not see any of my health information in rungap.  I am running the latest OS of 11.3.1 on my phone.  I can only see Endomondo.

RunGap only deals with workouts - not daily summaries such as steps, floors etc.

There is no direct sync between RunGap on multiple devices - but you can use one of the supported platforms such as Strava to send workouts from RunGap on your iPhone to RunGap on your iPad.
